Concert Piece was originally composed for the flutist Rosanne Santucci. This single-movement work has characteristics of the sonata form, with two contrasting themes: the first, graceful and lithe in the upper range, and the second making use of the velvety lower range of the flute. After the exposition of the themes follows a development section and then a recapitulation. Key relationships (in the traditional tonic-dominant axis) are replaced in favor of varying "scale-colors", and the second theme returns in the recap using the scale-color of the first theme.
